Things to consider
Your first consideration is to ensure that you are eligible for a Motability car. You should then review the points below: price, suitability, wheelchair accessible, fuel consumption, greener choice, insurance and adaptations.
There are over 400 cars available to drive away at no more than the cost of your weekly allowance. We call this ‘nil’ advance payment (AP). Click here to find out more about advance payments. To search our complete range of over 4,000 cars use our online Searchable Price Guide.
Did you know by choosing the diesel model of the car you are considering, you could potentially save money over the course of your lease? To find out more, visit our Save With Green pages.
Cars vary considerably in measurements. Seat height, door opening angle and storage space for wheelchairs and equipment can all make the difference between a car that is suitable and a car that is neither enjoyable nor comfortable to drive. We've outlined some of the key decisions and considerations that may help you narrow down your search in our "Choosing your car" guide [PDF 3,674kb].
Information on the accessibility of many of the cars featured on the Scheme can be found on our Searchable Price Guide.
If you have difficulty transferring from your wheelchair into a standard car, then a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAV) could be for you.
For more information on WAVs visit our dedicated WAV pages or download our guide to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles [PDF 3,580 kb]. You can also search for prices of all the WAVs available to lease through Motability on our Searchable Price Guide.
Fuel costs can add a great deal to your cost of motoring and cars vary significantly in how many miles per gallon (mpg) they achieve. Cars with a higher mpg cost less to run and are often more environmentally friendly.
Our Searchable Price Guide and printed Car Price Guide [pdf 5,200kb] both advise on the mpg figure for every car available through Motability.
We currently have over 400 lower emission models (those with an emission level of 120g/km or less) for you to choose from. Our Searchable Price Guide lets you search by CO² emissions and highlights the 'greenest' cars available in each car class.
To get more information on car emissions, or tips on how to minimise the environmental impact of motoring please visit our Greener Scheme pages.
As is common with many insurance policies if you intend to add drivers aged under 25 to your insurance policy restrictions and higher excesses are applied. Drivers under 25 are restricted to cars in Car Group 18 or below of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) [Opens in new window] 1-50 scale. Please check carefully with your dealer when choosing your car, and ask about PASS PLUS training to reduce the excess for under 25s.
Many of the most popular adaptations can be added to your car at the start of your lease at no additional cost. Simple adaptations can assist with speed and steering; signalling and safety; stowage systems; and seating and access.
For more information on adaptations visit our dedicated adaptations pages or download our guide to adaptations, "Make it yours" [PDF 2,700 kb].
