Government Scrappage Incentive

Questions and Answers

I want to lease a car through Motability, am I eligible for the Scrappage incentive?
No. Contract Hire (or leasing) arrangements have been excluded from this Government incentive, this is the case regardless of whether you are a retail contract hire customer or a Motability customer. Motability’s all-inclusive leasing package still offers great value for money as we are continuing to take advantage of our purchasing power and secure discounts with manufacturers which we are able to pass on to our customers.

I am considering using Motability’s HP scheme, how does Scrappage apply to me?
If you are interested in buying a car outright using the Motability hire purchase scheme, you may be eligible for the scrappage incentive. Contact your Motability dealer who will be able to supply detailed information on whether you are eligible and how the incentive operates. In exchange for scrapping your old vehicle and buying a new one, the Government and manufacturers will provide a £2,000 incentive towards the cost of buying your car using a Hire Purchase arrangement.
• The scheme runs from 18 May 2009
• The scheme will be available to the first 300,000 eligible car buyers, or until 31 March 2010 (or sooner if Government funding limits run out).

Which cars are eligible?
It is Motability’s understanding that the regulations regarding this incentive include the following criteria, however you should check with your participating dealer to confirm whether your old vehicle and potential new car make you eligible to receive the incentive
The vehicle you are trading in must:
• Be a car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kilograms (kg)
• Be first registered in the United Kingdom (UK) on or before 31 July 1999
• Either be registered or have a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in your name
• Have been registered to you “the keeper” continuously for 12 calendar months before the order date of the new vehicle
• Have a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C)
• Have a current MOT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle
The new vehicle you want to buy must be:
• A car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kg
• First registered in the UK on or after mid May 2009 to the same keeper as the vehicle being scrapped
• Declared new at first registration in the UK with no former keepers

I’m interested in HP, where can I find out more information?
This incentive is being operated by dealerships in arrangement with participating manufacturers and therefore you should visit your dealer to find out how they are applying the details of the incentive. As with all car purchases, discounts may vary between dealerships and you should contact your dealer directly for information.
