Vehicle Category

4x4
4x4s, or Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as they are also known, come in a range of different sizes and offer varying degrees of "off road" ability. Some 4x4s have space and seating benefits assotiated with MPVs and many are four wheel drive, where the engine applies power to all four wheels.

Estate
A typical estate will be an extended version of an existing saloon or hatchback with useful storage space for mobility aids etc.

Family
These are large 4 door saloons or 5 door hatchbacks and are considerably larger than "small family" cars.

MPV
With seating for up to 7 people, these spacious vehicles can benefit from increased headroom and legroom with flexible space. They tend to have higher seats for easier access, while larger models may also have sliding doors.

Small
Typically the smallest car available in a manufacturer´s range. They are usually 3 or 5 door hatchbacks with a small engine size.

Small Family
This would be considered to be the smallest family car. A 3 or 5 door hatchback or saloon, it will have space for up to 5 adults, with more interior and boot space than a "small" car.

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
This is a vehicle that has been converted to carry passengers who travel in a wheelchair. They usually have a built in ramp and may be fitted with a winch to help get the wheelchair into the vehicle. There are also a number of vehicles available that can be driven from a wheelchair.

Advance Payment

Advance payments are payable in one lump sump to your dealer at the start of your lease and cover the difference between the amount your allowance covers over the three year agreement period, and the overall cost of the car you choose. Depending on the vehicle you choose, this amount can vary from under £100 to several thousand pounds. There are currently over 250 cars on the Scheme available with no advance payment.

Weekly Rental
The Weekly Rental is the amount of your allowance that will be paid to Motability Operations each week in exchange for your car. T/A denotes "Total Allowance" and means that all of your higher rate allowance is payable for the duration of the lease. Where T/A is payable, any increases in the allowance are factored into the total cost of the lease and therefore will be paid directly to Motability Operations. For some cars, the amount required each week is less than your total allowance and where this is the case the actual fixed weekly payment is shown and any increases in your allowance will not be paid to Motability Operations.

Avg. Mpg.
Average miles per gallon. Using independent data, this figure shows the average number of miles a car can travel for every gallon of fuel. Miles per gallon achieved depends on driving conditions, and therefore these figures are shown primarily for comparison and will not necessarily be the same as fuel consumption on the road. For more information, go to the VCA website.

CO²
You may wish to consider the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) the car you select produces. Carbon Dioxide is one of the main by-products (emissions) from petrol or diesel burnt in a car´s engine, and is one of the major greenhouse gases that contributes to climate change. All cars sold within the EU are subject to exhaust emission tests and results are given as an emission level in grammes per kilometre travelled. Cars with an emission level of less than 120g/km are considered low emission models and are highlighted in green. Most low emission cars are either smaller or diesel models, however Motability recognises that one size most definitely does not fit all, and we have therefore also highlighted in green some of the lowest emission cars for each class of vehicle.

Annual Fuel Cost
Based on the average annual mileage driven by Motability customers (8,300) divided by the miles per gallon stated for the car, multiplied by the average cost per gallon of fuel (diesel or petrol), taken from the AA fuel price report. This figure gives an approximate average annual fuel cost for the purposes of comparison between models only and should not be relied upon as an accurate indication of actual annual fuel costs.
